What is Blended Learning?

Blended learning is an instructional model that combines online instruction and teacher led instruction. In a blended learning model there are three instructional components:

    • Online learning where students have some control over path and pace
    • Teacher led instruction in a brick-and-mortar location
    • The interaction between student’s online learning path and direct in person instruction

What truly brings blended learning to life is this third part of the model–the connection and interaction between students’ online learning paths and students’ in person instruction. This would look like teachers using the data they receive from students’ online instruction to differentiate teacher led instruction and– conversely– using data from teacher led instruction to inform students’ online learning content.

Why utilize a blended learning model? Blended learning can provide an academically strong education that meets students’ unique needs and create equitable opportunities for them to reach their potential. In a thriving blended learning model there is consistent small group instruction where teachers are more easily able to differentiate to meet student needs. Students also engage in meaningful online content that helps them fill in gaps and receive enrichment. Teachers and students both receive improved data from online content and teacher led instruction. Blended learning is an excellent tool that meets students where they are and can support a strong academic program–which is something that all children deserve.
